Authorities have detained two people on fraud charges for selling horse meat presented as beef to state-run nurseries in the Georgian regions of Marneuli and Kareli. The SSG claimed that in May, the companies falsely labeled the horse meat as beef and sold it to the nurseries. A Marneuli Nursery Union lawyer, Edisher Kutalia, stated that horse DNA was found in all 11 nurseries in Marneuli. This incident sparked outrage on social media, with some saying that this incident was not unprecedented and that children’s health might be at serious risk. One social media user criticised Marneuli Mayor Dauri Ismailov, asking: ‘what’s the point of building nurseries if our children will eat horse meat?’
