Changes to driver behaviour and reforms around road policing are needed given the outcome of the most recent Garda roads policing operation over the Bank Holiday weekend according to Deputy Michael Murphy. Deputy Murphy, chairs the Oireachtas Transport Committee and says the number of arrests over the August Bank Holiday weekend should be a wake-up call for everyone concerned with road safety. Over 4,000 drivers were detected speeding while over 500 drivers were found to be either intoxicated, using mobile phones or ignoring seatbelt laws while driving. Deputy Murphy is calling for an examination of how Roads Policing Units are deployed so that they can have the greatest impact. The Clonmel based TD also wants a new system of investigating the cause of every collision whether that is driver behaviour, road design, vehicle safety, signage, weather conditions, medical issues or enforcement.
