The National Trust for Scotland had applied for permission for repairs and the reinstatement of entrance gates ironmongery, the repainting of gates and repairs to masonry. A report by Fife Council planners explained that the works were confined to the decorative entrance gates at the southern entrance to the palace grounds. “They make a positive contribution to both the special interest of the listed structure and the character and appearance of the Falkland Conservation Area. “The gates remain in active use and continue to serve as the principal entrance to the palace grounds. Approving the application, planners said the repairs, reinstatement works and redecoration represented an “appropriate conservation led” intervention.
