Naming the five movies that shaped who he became as an actor to A.Frame, Butler found himself weighing up a quartet of Martin Scorsese greats. “It’s just incomparable the amount of talent and inspiration that I’ve felt from those films, and particularly with Raging Bull, because the dedication that he had to that part is so endlessly inspiring to me.” There’s a reason Raging Bull remains required viewing for generations of young actors. Convincing an audience they’re watching a person rather than an impression is the far more difficult trick, and it’s exactly what Butler sees De Niro achieving throughout Raging Bull. On a technical level, Butler praised Raging Bull for the way in which “it’s beautifully shot” before professing his love for a variety of its other merits, including the musical score and stark monochromatic cinematography.
