The 1974 album Jeff Lynne admitted “was almost impossible” to playFor more rudimentary bands, translating their studio recordings to the stage isn’t the slightest bit of a challenge, but Jeff Lynne and his Electric Light Orchestra don’t fall into that category. It’s also easy to cut him a break when looking at the ensemble of musicians that he managed to fit onto every album. Crucially, Lynne never saw playing live as the most important part of his sound. He was of a similar mindset to The Beatles before him, and that often meant trying to make songs that weren’t exactly friendly to the live stage. While they may have failed in their mission to replicate the album in a live environment, Lynne never changed his ethos, and always has continued to prioritise the studio above all else.
