According to the Water Incident Database, August recorded the highest number of water-related human fatalities in 2025. A survey of 2,000 UK dog owners commissioned by Dogs Trust found almost three-quarters (74 per cent) felt confident identifying whether open water was safe for their dog. Owen Sharp, chief executive of Dogs Trust, said: "One preventable water incident is one too many. Dogs Trust has produced a Water Safety Checklist to help owners identify potential hazards before allowing their dogs into open water.
