Dr Georgina Angel, consultant in public health and screening and immunisation lead for NHS England South West, said: "Vaccination is one of the safest and most effective ways to protect yourself, your family and your community from serious illness.
"Immunisation Awareness Month is a helpful reminder to check whether you, your child, or someone you care for is up to date with their routine vaccinations."
Routine vaccines are available free of charge through the NHS and play a crucial role in controlling or eliminating diseases such as polio and diphtheria.
Dr Angel said the vaccines offered by the NHS are "rigorously tested for safety and effectiveness", and that serious side effects are rare.
She encouraged anyone with questions to speak with a healthcare professional, who can offer advice and address any concerns.
