Around 95% of the Sun is expected to be covered over Exeter when the eclipse reaches its peak, making it the most dramatic eclipse visible from the UK since August 1999, weather permitting. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, partially obscuring the Sun from view. The UK is not expected to experience another total solar eclipse until 2090, while another eclipse covering more than 90% of the Sun will not be visible until 2081. Visit Exeter has highlighted several locations it says could offer good viewing opportunities because of their open western horizons. Only eclipse glasses meeting the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard, approved solar viewers or indirect viewing methods such as pinhole projectors should be used.
