CHEROKEE COUNTY — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is warning locals about a circulating phone scam that could impact individuals. They says scammers may claim to be law enforcement or representatives of a local, state, or federal government agency. No legitimate local, state, or federal government agency will demand immediate payment over the phone, by text, or by email, or require payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or any other payment methods. The CCSO says if the caller tells you not to contact your local law enforcement agency or instructs you to keep the call confidential, hang up immediately and contact your local law enforcement agency. If you believe you have been targeted by this scam or have provided money or sensitive financial information, contact your local law enforcement agency as soon as possible.
