Work will begin next week west of the Meeting Place café, Hove, with specialist contractors using garnet blasting to strip the cast iron railings back to bare metal.
Councillor David McGregor, cabinet member for economy, culture, heritage and tourism, said: "It's great to be starting work on restoring our iconic seafront railings and we're excited to see what lies beneath the many layers of paint.
"Maintaining the seafront is an ongoing challenge and projects like restoring the railings are a huge undertaking.
Earlier this year, 11 of the distinctive cucumber benches along Hove seafront were restored and repainted with the help of volunteers.
The railings project forms part of a wider seafront improvement programme, which includes major schemes such as the regeneration of Madeira Terrace.
