A HOTEL has closed off parts of its outdoor grounds amid growing concerns over toxic algae in a nearby lake, warning the crisis is beginning to hit trade during the peak summer season. The Oysterfleet Hotel, on Knightswick Road, Canvey has restricted access to sections of its garden that border Canvey Lake after warning signs were put in place advising people not to touch the water. More than 20 birds and fish are reported to have died during July, with toxic blue-green algae widely suspected to be responsible. (Image: Laura Fromling)Mr Mathews said the hotel had supported efforts to improve the lake for many years but believes the situation has now reached a critical stage. The council, which assumed responsibility for managing Canvey Lake last month, has said the overall risk to people remains low, although contact with the algae can cause irritation.
