State prosecutor Sub-Inspector Gladstone Kanyezi said the court has ordered a medical assessment to determine whether Kadume was suffering from a mental health condition at the time of the incident. “We are taking her to the hospital to establish whether she was of sound mind or whether the incident was linked to a mental health condition associated with childbirth,” said Kanyezi. “The medical findings will assist the court in determining the appropriate course of action, including sentencing if applicable,” he said. Kadume is alleged to have killed the infant by stabbing him in the neck and inflicting other injuries at Mbeta Village, under Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje District, on the night of July 30, 2026.
