Tony Evers is urging federal officials to reverse new requirements for stores that accept food assistance, saying the coming changes will worsen food insecurity in the state.
ADVERTISEMENTRetailers must carry at least seven types of food in each staple category of dairy, vegetables or fruits, grains and protein.
The new rule also requires stores to stock more perishable foods, such as fresh produce or refrigerated and frozen items.
Retailers will have to offer options across three staple categories of food, which is an increase from the current standard of two categories.
The Democratic governor wrote that small stores will struggle the most with meeting the new requirements, especially those in remote rural communities or dense urban areas.
