“Aman,” writer-director Rahul Roye’s short film about a trans man who discovers he is pregnant on the eve of his gender-affirming surgery, has attached Nikkhil Advani and Dominique Welinski as executive producers. The film will have its world premiere in the Short Cuts competition at the Toronto Film Festival, running Sept. 10–20. The filmmakers describe the casting as a landmark for transmasculine representation in Indian cinema, noting that no trans role in the film goes to a non-trans actor. By placing a trans man at its center, the film exposes how fragile our definitions of gender truly are. Films previously backed by the Sumitra Gupta Foundation for the Arts include “Shadowbox,” Sundance winner “Cactus Pears,” Venice selection “Stolen” and Toronto selection “Dug Dug.”
