Toll problems with the Belle Chasse Bridge in Plaquemines Parish have become a learning experience for Southwest Louisiana legislators who are following work on the new Interstate 10 Calcasieu River Bridge. The Advocate, in its fourth story in a series about the Lake Charles I-10 bridge, said tolling problems at the Belle Chasse Bridge prompted widespread complaints from residents after that bridge opened last year. The Lake Charles bridge’s toll would be the only one required on I-10 spanning the nation’s east to west coasts. The state finalized its Lake Charles bridge agreement before tolling began on the Belle Chasse project. Previously, DOTD said toll rates could go as high as $12.36 for large trucks without a toll tag.
