The Nigerian Government is set to begin the nationwide deployment of a 90,000-kilometre fibre optic backbone within weeks, indicating a major landmark digital infrastructure investment designed to expand broadband penetration and strengthen connectivity across the country.
He said all contractual, financing and resource mobilisation processes for the fibre optic project had been concluded, clearing the way for construction to commence nationwide in the coming weeks.
Dr. Tijani explained that the project would extend fibre optic infrastructure to every state, geopolitical zone, local government area and ward, significantly improving the quality and reach of internet connectivity.
He cited the designation of digital infrastructure as Critical National Infrastructure, the review of telecommunications tariffs and the harmonisation of taxes as key reforms driving the sector’s growth and sustainability.
