The alterations are meant to improve the setting and historical integrity of the fort, as well as provide public benefits like better visibility of the fort. The changes were supported by Historic England, the Palmerston Forts Society, and the Gosport Society. The proposals seek to balance public access, heritage preservation, and modern use, ensuring the fort remains a functional and accessible historical monument, according to the application.
