Bhubaneswar: Faced with a persistently high road accident death toll, the Odisha government is set to overhaul its approach to road safety by prioritising the construction of “forgiving” roads and the creation of zero-fatality corridors across the state. Forgiving roads minimise the fallout of mistakes, while self‑explaining roads use uniform design, signage, and visual cues to make the right choices obvious. Zero-fatality corridors are being identified on selected stretches of Public Works Department roads and national highways. Discussions are expected to cover innovative engineering solutions, road safety audits, data-driven decision-making, emergency response, post-crash care and institutional reforms aimed at eventually achieving zero road fatalities. To improve survival rates after crashes, the government intends to make highway patrolling mandatory across the national highway network and station ambulances at vulnerable points along national highways, state highways and major district roads.
