BACKUS — After a combined two hours of discussion, the Backus City Council ultimately approved a conditional use permit for the new male Good News Recovery House proposed for the former Backus School building. The number of people present prompted the council to schedule a second hearing in August so that all those present could share their feedback. The Aug. 3 hearing prior to the regular council meeting was scheduled at 5 p.m. to ensure enough time. Attendees shared many emotional pleas to approve or deny the permit, including former addicts sharing their experience in the women's Good News Recovery House speaking in favor, and residents of Backus speaking against. ADVERTISEMENTThe council ultimately approved the permit, with member Karl Flier showing signs of apprehension, asking the attorney if the council's hands were tied.
