A planning application for a new illuminated cash machine in the shopfront of Zabka Food Store has been denied by Westmorland and Furness Council after concerns were raised about its impact on the historic setting. The plans also included an illuminated fascia with blue “ATM” lettering along with a non-illuminated sign reading “Free Cash Withdrawals” and featuring the Euronet logo. Kendal Town Council initially deferred its response to await conservation feedback but ultimately recommended refusal, agreeing that the plans would harm local heritage assets. Planning officers described the shopfront as already visually busy and concluded the cash machine and associated signage would cause cumulative visual clutter. It was noted that the council had engaged positively with the applicant but could not resolve the fundamental policy conflicts identified in the proposal.
