The Education Secretary on Wednesday called for responsible gun ownership across households, following the rising gun proliferation among learners. “The safety of our learners does not end at the doors of schools – it begins at home,” Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” M. Angara said in Filipino in a news release. The initiative comes after a nine-year-old learner was accidentally hit by a .38 caliber pistol while playing with a 13-year-old companion in a home last Monday, six weeks after the fatal Tacloban school shooting that also involved minors. The deadly school shooting in Tacloban in June has prompted the Department of Education (DepEd) to roll out stricter security measures for public schools. “Responsible firearm storage is not only a matter of complying with the law; it is also a moral responsibility to prevent life-changing tragedies,” Mr. Angara said.
