Today, the local governments of Long Island stand broadly unified in opposition to the state’s attempts to override local zoning decisions and dissolve villages. Kathy Hochul proposed to override village and towns’ zoning authority in the state’s 2023-2024 budget if they were not meeting Albany’s housing targets. “It’s about local control, not Hochul control,” said Republican state Assembly Member Mike Durso at a 2024 protest in the Village of Babylon that drew hundreds. The pushback from local governments was strong enough to cause the governor to back down, and the provisions to override local zoning decisions were removed from the budget. “We collaborate, we work very closely together, and I respect [them] wanting to have very local control,” he said.
