Progressive Democrat Dr Abdul El-Sayed is locked in a close contest with Representative Haley Stevens to win Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. NBC News has, however, projected El-Sayed’s victory in the Democratic primary to advance to the general election in November. Both candidates are vying for Michigan’s US Senate seat to replace retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. If successful, the US Democratic Senate candidate will defeat centrist Representative Haley Stevens in an election that has exposed deep divisions between the Democratic Party establishment and its progressive wing. Later, El-Sayed attended the University of Michigan before completing his medical degree at Columbia University and earning a second doctorate from the University of Oxford.
