Nineteen future healthcare professionals from universities across Missouri gained firsthand experience with the unique characteristics of rural communities through the Rural Immersion Program, a collaborative initiative between the University of Missouri School of Medicine’s Rural Scholars Program and University of Missouri Extension. Participants attended presentations and panel discussions led by regional healthcare professionals, medical providers, emergency services personnel, nurses, dentists, social workers, and healthcare administrators. Discussions focused on Missouri’s healthcare workforce, access to medical services, healthcare costs, and public policies that influence the delivery of care throughout rural communities. Participants identified the challenges associated with rural healthcare practice while recognizing them as opportunities for professional development. They also emphasized the broader responsibilities of rural healthcare providers, the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, and the lasting relationships that develop when healthcare professionals become actively involved in the communities they serve.
