Johnson County Jail facing influx of inmates after Iowa Legislature amends crime lawHunter08/05/26The Johnson County Jail, already facing space issues, has been affected by a new state law that’s making the jail even more crowded.
The new law keeps more people in custody as they wait to see a judge.
Sheriff Kunkel says the new law has made it necessary to send more inmates to other jails.
He said on one day in July, 44 inmates had to spend the night in six other jails across the region.
Johnson County supervisors are currently working on the language for a bond issue vote in November that would finance the construction of a new jail and sheriff’s office.
