Born in 1943 in Bari, Italy, conductor Bruno Campanella died yesterday at the age of 83. He studied composition under Nino Rota and Luigi Dallapiccola and came to fame in the late 1970s becoming known as a specialist in Bel Canto. Campanella hold major positions including Principal Conductor at the Teatro Regio di Torino from 1992 to 1995. Campanella’s discography includes recordings of La Fille du Regiment with June Anderson and Alfredo Kraus. He also recorded Ernani with Daniela Dessi as well as a Bel Canto recording with Kathleen Battle and I Capuleti & I Montecchi with Katia Ricciarelli.
