While younger couples still make up the lion’s share of divorces, older people are catching up fast. Overall divorce rates have dropped 28 per cent in the past two decades, but for over-65s the numbers are climbing. Divorce rates among men over 65 have jumped by 23 per cent, and among women they’ve risen an astonishing 38 per cent. Unlike younger couples, whose divorces often centre on children, jobs, or debts, older couples face a lifetime of assets and plans to untangle. Many older couples own their homes outright and have years of memories tied up in them.
