Five years after the attorney general’s office raided Stapleton’s home, prosecutors brought Stapleton to federal court over allegations tied to Albuquerque Public Schools funding. Her team also pointed out that in 2019, Johnson’s company was not initially chosen during a bidding process. Johnson’s attorneys blamed Stapleton and said Johnson did not know what Stapleton was allegedly doing. Prosecutors called the current financial head of Albuquerque schools and the former head of procurement to testify. In court, Rennette Apodaca said she could not find paperwork showing how Johnson’s company became a vendor and found an invoice for payment without an APS purchase order attached.
