AdvertisementTHE IRISH Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) called for an independent examination of presentations at the emergency department (ED) of University Hospital Limerick (UHL) and of decisions to admit patients to the hospital. Mary Fogarty, INMO’s assistant director of industrial relations and Mid West representative, was speaking on Tuesday when the organisation had recorded 130 admitted patients waiting for a bed at UHL. Ms Fogarty said there should be independent examination of the “presentations and rationale for admission to the hospital”. “Extensive independent analysis by HIQA and the ESRI has confirmed that the Mid West does not have sufficient acute hospital bed capacity for the population it serves. These developments are essential if the Mid West is to address the long-standing capacity deficit identified by independent experts.”
