Modern creators like Taylor Sheridan and Guy Ritchie have kept crime thrillers firmly at the forefront of modern television, but a new show from MGM+ nails some of the most iconic themes of both. While there are some legitimate historical figures, like the infamous Gambino Family capo John Gotti, The Westies' primary cast is made up of characters inspired by real people. As is the case with the best in modern crime thrillers, the show's true strength is in its cast. Oscar winner J.K. Simmons anchors the cast as crime boss Eamon Sweeney, but going toe-to-toe with him is celebrated dramatic actor Titus Welliver (Bosch) as NYPD officer Glenn Keenan. The fracturing relationships within the Westies criminal enterprise hit on the themes of family and loyalty that are central to Taylor Sheridan's litany of drama and thriller shows from the last eight years.
