Before he became the subject of a major museum retrospective, Bunny Matthews helped shape the voice of OffBeat. Following Hurricane Katrina, Matthews departed OffBeat, but his influence on the magazine and on generations of New Orleans music fans and readers endures. HNOC has collected Matthews’ work since 1979 and, following his death in 2021, acquired the Bunny Matthews Archive which is an extensive collection of more than 800 original drawings, correspondence and ephemera. Launching alongside the exhibition is Bunny Matthews: His Life, Art, and Obsessions, the first biography and monograph devoted to the artist. “Bunny Matthews: His Life, Art, and Obsessions” opens September18 and remains on view through May 9, 2027.
