The statement said that forecasts show peak temperatures of 40–42 degrees Celsius in the coming days, and the National Chief Medical Officer has therefore extended the third-level heat alert until midnight on Friday. At that point, a cold front is expected to bring temporary relief, with temperatures set to remain below 30 degrees for a few days. They added that the cold front will not bring enough precipitation to Hungary to improve the drought situation, but enough rain may fall in Austria to raise the record-low water level of the Danube. According to the briefing, the current water level is a few centimetres higher than the threshold that would necessitate shutting down the last operational turbine at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. Calculations suggest that a gradual improvement is expected in the coming days, but the water level required to restart the other turbines must be sustained over a longer period.
