Following investigations by the Environment Agency, the water company entered into two Enforcement Undertakings – legally binding agreements that allow firms to fund environmental repairs instead of facing court action. In total, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust will receive over £1.8m, including £1.5m linked to two unauthorised discharges from Blackminster wastewater treatment works into Broadway Brook in 2022, and £327,424 after ammonia limits were breached at Cheltenham’s Hayden works in 2021. Severn Rivers Trust will receive £450,000 from the same Cheltenham incident. As part of the undertakings, Severn Trent must also cover the Environment Agency’s costs and carry out work to stop offending, prevent a repeat and restore damaged habitats. The funding will support projects such as tree planting under the Severn Treescapes initiative, river habitat restoration, floodplain reconnection and wetland creation, aimed at making local waterways and catchments healthier and more resilient.
