The investment centers on hydrogen production, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and new energy infrastructure, reflecting a broader industry shift toward repurposing conventional refining assets rather than developing entirely new industrial sites.
The announcement comes as Britain seeks to accelerate investment in low carbon fuels to meet legally binding climate targets while preserving industrial competitiveness.
Essar has owned the Stanlow refinery through its subsidiary Essar Energy Transition Fuels since 2011 and says it has already invested approximately £1 billion in modernizing the facility over the past 15 years.
One of the largest proposed projects at Stanlow is a sustainable aviation fuel facility based on Methanol to Jet technology.
Beyond supporting refining operations and synthetic fuel production, Essar is also evaluating commercial data center developments powered by on site hydrogen ready generation.
