Hormuz Crisis: Electric Car Sales Double in Major Markets
['Juan Cole']
Informed Comment
The IEA expects nearly a third of new car sales in 2026 to be electric, an unprecedented proportion.
Outside these bigger EV markets, sales rose even more dramatically by 80% in March-June after Israel and the US launched their war on Iran.
In the previously smaller EV markets, sales were up 75% in the first half of this year over the previous one.
In Latin America as a whole, EV sales were up 130% in March-June over the previous year.
Global car sales fell in H1 2026, so the significant increase in EV sales worldwide is even more remarkable.
