The scheme, running in Durham City, provides students with anti-theft bike reflectors, Gold Standard bike locks, and tamper-proof identification stickers that link to the police-approved Bike Register database via QR code. The Bike Register system enables police to confirm ownership and recover stolen bicycles, making it harder for thieves to resell stolen bikes. Data shows that many cycle thefts in the city during winter occurred on or near Durham University’s campus, even in areas with CCTV coverage and designated bike racks. Other measures being introduced include a new library lock-sharing scheme developed by Durham Constabulary and the university. Durham University and the police and crime commissioner will continue to distribute the security devices in the coming months as part of ongoing efforts to reduce cycle theft in the city.
