New Delhi: The Supreme Court has acquitted a man from Odisha who spent nearly 22 years in jail after his conviction in a triple murder case, holding that evidence against him was ‘weak and highly unreliable.’
The SC voiced concern that a procedural lapse by the Orissa High Court had kept the man behind bars for an additional decade.
On January 11, 2016, the High Court dismissed his appeal after refusing to condone a delay of 3,157 days in filing it.
The Supreme Court stated that a conviction based solely on eyewitness testimony is possible, but only if it is credible, consistent, and consistent with other circumstances.
Considering these facts, the Supreme Court concluded that the prosecution failed to prove the crime beyond reasonable doubt, and acquitted Jani.
