A UK inquiry into common parasite treatments for pets finds their widespread use “is not supported by robust scientific evidence.” Our current research focuses on detecting flea and tick treatment chemicals – imidacloprid, fipronil, and fluralaner – in wastewater systems across the North Island of New Zealand. “New international research shows that chemicals from common pet flea and tick treatments aren’t staying on our pets. Such restrictions do not apply when they are used as pet treatments. “It would also be useful to have research that compares the environmental impact of spot-on treatments (those applied to the skin) with oral treatments.
