Neena Mae Rayos, Philippine Canadian InquirerAugust 05, 2026VANCOUVER – 61-year-old kayaker Martin Rother successfully completed the grueling 1,207-kilometre Race to Alaska on July 5.
The North Vancouver resident finished the unsupported, human-powered journey from Port Townsend, Washington, to Ketchikan, Alaska, in 18 days alongside his paddling partner Yota Kano.
The Race to Alaska, an unsupported 1,207-kilometre journey from Washington to Alaska, challenges participants with a unique prize structure where only the winner takes home $10,000 while second place receives a set of steak knives.
Although Rother and Kano did not win monetary prizes, Rother emphasized the profound value of the community spirit.
“The human part of this race is phenomenal,” Rother said.
