Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said he will formally register a new political party by October 15 at the latest, after Law and Justice (PiS), Poland’s main opposition party, deemed his and his allies’ membership effectively over. The former prime minister said he and his allies wanted to focus on challenging Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government rather than becoming embroiled in internal disputes within PiS. This second camp is centred on former education minister Przemysław Czarnek, an ally of Kaczyński and the party’s candidate for prime minister. Morawiecki, son of Kornel Morawiecki, founder of the underground Fighting Solidarity movement, was the longest serving PiS prime minister, having held the job for six years between 2017 and 2023. Before entering politics in November 2015 as deputy prime minister and development minister, he had been chief executive of Bank Zachodni WBK.
