The North Platte city council took a step Tuesday intended to better enforce “code” violations such as overgrown weeds, trees and bushes; obstructions, junk vehicles, and other unkept, unsafe conditions on private property. Clark said 60-70% of property owners correct the violation after the first notice. He said 950 annual notices of violations generate about 2,850 contacts with property owners, many of them asking what’s become of their complaint. Council members agreed that the list could reassure residents that the city is taking actions on complaints and enforcement occurs consistently. “I see this as bully tactics,” Garrick said, maintaining that threatening and publicly shaming residents could make some property owners more resistant instead of more cooperative.
