The bylaw was the council’s requirement on businesses to display the non-regulatory EatSafe Auckland food grade certificates. Food grade certificates – A being excellent and E being the worst – have been helping assure Aucklanders that food they buy is prepared safely and suitable to eat since 2016. Councillor Lotu Fuli asked staff to make sure the messaging around food grade certificates being displayed was clear to the public. “If people don’t see a food grade, then you’re going to go somewhere else because you will think, why aren’t you displaying a food grade? “So if the shops want to lose their customers, it’s in their benefit to display their food grade.”
