The Oxfordshire Blue Plaques Board received permission to hang a new commemorative sign for Mary Sophia Merivale, the first female councillor in Oxford, on a city centre house earlier this year. The new plaque was unveiled by representatives from the county and district councils on Friday, July 31 at 7 Park Town, Oxford. She lived at the address in Park Town which now hosts her commemorative plaque for 35 years from 1894, up until her death. The Oxfordshire Blue Plaques Board, part of the Oxford Civic Society and chaired by Oxford professor of history emeritus Robert Evans, applied to Oxford City Council to put up the blue plaque in March this year. The historic city of Oxford hosts a total of 86 blue plaques installed by the Oxfordshire Blue Plaques Board between 2001 and today, with a full list available on the organisation's website.
