Whitehaven Town Crier Marc Goodwin will deliver the annual proclamation for the historic Lammas Fair at 11am on Saturday. The "Lammas Fair shout" has taken place every year since 1672, when King Charles I granted the right to hold the market. Mr Richardson is part of the town crier committee, which works to preserve the tradition and support the crier each year. According to deputy lieutenant and historian Gerard Richardson, the Lammas Fair market played a major role in the development of Whitehaven’s port, helping it outpace other Cumbrian harbours in trade. He will then return to town for the women’s sea shanty group at the Santa Maria at 2pm.
