The incident happened on January 4, north of Stowmarket, and involved an HR200 (a light monoplane used for training) and a Cessna 152 ( an aircraft also used for training). At their closest, the planes were within 150 metres from each other and seconds away from a catastrophic crash. The HR200 pilot reported the other aircraft "appeared straight out of the sun," describing it as a "late sighting," with no time to take action. Members concluded that there had been a risk of collision and the investigation found several safety barriers had failed or were absent. It also noted that a suitable air traffic service could have increased situational awareness and helped prevent the incident.
