Masterton District Council Supports Wairarapa Unitary Authority ProposalFollowing a robust debate on one of the most significant decisions affecting the future of local government, Masterton District Council has voted to take the Head Start pathway and proceed with a proposal for a future Wairarapa unitary authority.
The decision follows a three-month period during which councils considered options for future amalgamation and the establishment of unitary authorities.
Council believes supporting a Wairarapa unitary authority gives us the best opportunity to shape our own future while preserving the identity and voice of our district."
Mayor Johnson said while the preferred model focuses on a Wairarapa unitary authority, opportunities for regional collaboration would remain where they delivered better outcomes.
Central government decisions on proposals submitted through the Head Start pathway are expected in early 2027.
