August 5, 2026China’s self-driving tech company WeRide, which is viewed as the top contender in the China market, has announced it will enter the Danish market via a partnership with a local electric mobility operator GreenMobility. This will be the sixth European country the driverless car manufacturer will now have a presence in. Currently, only the US, China and the UAE have approved self-driving vehicles for use on the roads, and Europe is currently in the process of carrying out trials and pilot schemes, while China and the US are the only countries producing the vehicles—most of the driverless vehicles in the UAE are from China. As Europe is accelerating its trials for this frontier technology, it is becoming another battleground for another US-China tech rivalry. Both American and Chinese companies are eager to dominate this potential huge market which is still in its infancy.
