Chinese automaker BYD on Tuesday launched its first plug-in hybrid flex-fuel vehicle built in Brazil, marking a milestone in its Brazilian manufacturing expansion, according to Reuters. BYD said it invested 100 million reais ($19.6 million) in developing the flex-fuel project, while the broader Camaçari complex represents a 5.5 billion reais investment. BYD Brazil Senior Vice President Alexandre Baldy said the model can run on electricity, gasoline or ethanol. The factory is projected to supply around 150,000 of the approximately 200,000 vehicles BYD aims to sell in Brazil in 2026. Total sales reached 23,465 vehicles, more than doubling from 9,680 units a year earlier, giving BYD a 9.1% market share and making it the country’s fourth-largest automaker.
