As I have listened to Oak Park’s debate over single-family zoning, I have become convinced that we are arguing about much more than zoning. We are often looking at many of the same facts, yet reaching very different conclusions. Those questions should not automatically be interpreted as opposition to inclusion or denial of Oak Park’s history. The challenge is that people often attach very different meanings to the same facts and symbols. Oak Park’s diversity includes more than race, income, and housing.
