Van der Horst from Esselenpark Primary School in Worcester, was known affectionately as “Peanut”. While details remain limited, questions have been raised about the safety and maintenance of rugby training equipment, which is widely used in schools across the country. The Western Cape Education Department also extended condolences to the Van der Horst family and confirmed that psychosocial support will be offered to both the family and the school. While rugby scrum machines are essential for training, their weight and instability can pose serious risks if not properly secured.
